STEM Day at Tumbulgum
In October, students from small schools across Tweed and Wollumbin came together at Tumbulgum Public School for an exciting day focused on STEM learning.
The students, all part of the Inspire High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) programs at their schools, worked collaboratively in teams on robotics, mechanics, programming, and coding. They created projects using software, designing their own unique solutions from scratch, testing their ideas, and making improvements when things didn’t work as planned.
The event was led by Mr Wilson, who teaches STEM to our students each week. “I just want kids to jump in and have a go. It’s inspiring to see them start thinking about where STEM could take them in the future,” he said.
Our own students know Mr Wilson well. Brian, a Year 6 student, shared, “All the teachers at Tumbulgum are great, especially Mr Wilson. He’s helped me think about what I want to do when I grow up.”
Jackson, a Year 3 student and part of our Inspire HPGE STEM class, said, “Being in this class makes school exciting. I look forward to it every week. I love programming robots and learning how to use technology to create things.”
The students from Stokers Siding have shown remarkable enthusiasm in STEM classes, particularly in areas related to mechanical engineering. One student, who aspires to be a mechanic, has been learning the fundamental principles of engine construction. By first mastering the programming steps involved in controlling fuel injectors. Having engaged with STEM learning for six years, he’s developed strong skills and achieved impressive progress in both coding and mechanical concepts.
Small schools in our region regularly come together for activities like music, STEM, sports and more. This gives students the best of both worlds, they can attend a small school close to home while also connecting with other kids who share their interests.
Our principal, Gen Esgate, explained, “We have some of the best small schools in NSW. They have unique character and belong to communities we truly care about. But our students also receive the same quality education and opportunities as any other school, taught by some of the best teachers.”
Public schools across NSW benefit from shared resources and equipment, including technology that small schools might not be able to afford on their own. By working together, our schools ensure students have access to excellent facilities, sometimes even better than those at larger schools.

Official School Opening
Wednesday 2nd September was a very special day for Tumbulgum Public School as we officially opened our beautiful new school building.
It was honestly quite overwhelming to look around and see such an incredible turnout of current families, former students and staff, community members and special guests who came together to celebrate this important milestone with us.
The new building represents such an exciting new chapter for our school, providing wonderful new spaces for our students to learn, grow and thrive. More than that, it was a chance to celebrate the history, resilience and strong community spirit that makes Tumbulgum Public School so special.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who took the time to join us. Seeing so many familiar faces, meeting people who have been part of our school's story over many generations, and sharing this moment with our community made the occasion incredibly memorable.
Thank you for helping us celebrate this exciting new chapter for Tumbulgum Public School. We are incredibly proud of our new school and so excited for what the future holds.

Tumbulgum Public School is a small school where nobody’s a stranger. Our parents know each other by name (and you’ll probably run into them at the post office). We’re proud of our connection to the Bundjalung community and the stretch of river we call home. At Tumby, students become part of a community that cares for one another and feels like home. After the 2022 floods, the whole community helped bring our school back. It has been rebuilt with modern learning facilities and raised so it is ready to handle whatever the river throws at it next. We have preserved everything our community loves about Tumby, and we are surrounded by natural beauty. It's the best of both worlds: a state-of-the-art school in a unique riverside setting, with the warmth, values, and community spirit that have always defined Tumby Public School.

On behalf of our school community, I welcome you to Tumbulgum Public School.
At Tumbulgum Public school, we offer a small school setting set on beautiful school grounds, catering for a diverse range of learners. Our team consist of high-quality staff extensively trained to support our students both academically and emotionally.
I believe that students thrive and learn to the best of their ability when they feel happy and safe at school. As principal, I promote positivity in all that I do. I build genuine relationships with my students and ensure that every child in my care in known, valued and cared for.
Tumbulgum Public school works collaboratively with the wider community, particularly our Aboriginal community, to maximise the benefits and learning outcomes of all students.
We are proud of our wonderful school with over 150 years of history and I encourage and welcome anyone interested in enrolling to come and see me any time as my door is always open.
